Austro-Hungarian postman, 1900s

Tier 5

Throughout the long history of news transmission, the postman is the constant on which the whole activity rests. From the first messengers on foot in ancient civilizations who, according to Herodotus, could be stopped by " neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night, to the fearless Dubrovnik messenger who had to walk for a month to reach Istanbul, and all the way to a reliable Austro-Hungarian postman with a full mail bag shown on this motif. Every news carrier was adorned with speed, accuracy, and reliability, the same features as postmen today.

Postman on a moped in Zagreb, 1960s

Tier 4

The motorization of postal transport in Croatia began in the 1910s, a decade after the first cars arrived in Croatia. Car transport has brought a new quality to postal traffic, especially when it comes to the speed and safety of transport of postal items, but also passengers. The modernization of the postal delivery service was later continued with the introduction of motorcycles alongside bicycles into delivery service. On a moped, like this one from the 1960s, the postman will deliver urgent mail for decades to come.

Telegraph delivery man on a bicycle in Zagreb, 1930s

Tier 3

After being delivered from the World's Fair in Paris in 1867, the bicycle became extremely popular in Croatia, so it is not surprising that it was mentioned at the end of the 19 th century as a new postal delivery vehicle. The original function of the postal two-wheeler was the delivery of urgent telegrams. This is evidenced by the telegram carrying case hung over the shoulder of this delivery man on a bicycle from the 1930s. The scene of the postman on a bicycle has thus become an everyday occurrence that evokes sympathy even today.

Austrian postilion, around 1730

Tier 2

A written message delivered to a messenger on horseback travelled significantly faster than a message carried by a messenger on foot. In cases of great haste, correspondence was marked “Cito, Cito, Citissime” (Latin for Fast, Fast, Fastest). A few centuries ago, a horseman in the service of the post office throughout Europe was called a postilion (from French postillon). He was adorned with an official postal uniform prescribed by special provisions, a specially shaped cap and high sturdy riding boots. A postilion was recognizable to everyone by the postal horn he wore slung over his shoulder and by which he announced his arrival at the destination as needed.

Mail coach for passengers, luggage and mail in Dalmatia, 1890s

Tier 1

The invention of horse-drawn vehicles made it possible to naturally connect the transport of goods and passengers with the transmission of news. The most important means of postal transport before the advent of the railway was a mail coach, mostly its fast version - a stagecoach. The guard of the mail coach, a postilion, took care of the safety of the passengers, but also the horses. He used a post horn to warn other coaches on the road to let the mail coach pass as well to signal its arrival at the post offices, which were evenly distributed along the main state roads for the needs of postal traffic.

F.A.Q.

What is the crypto stamp?

The crypto stamp is a stamp connecting the digital and the analogue world. The crypto stamp consists of two parts, a standard physical stamp and a digital non-fungible token (NFT) enabling the owner to save the stamp in his/her digital wallet. The physical stamp in the value of EUR 6,64 may be used for sending mail items, like any other stamp. The digital part may be kept in your wallet as part of your personal virtual collection, which comes in five different motifs, each with a different degree of uniqueness – carriage (3,000 copies), postilion (4,000 copies), cyclist (6,000 copies), moped (8,000 copies) and pedestrian (9,000 copies).

What is included in the crypto stamp package?

Your crypto stamp package contains a card with:
  • A detachable physical stamp with a QR code containing the serial number of your digital crypto stamp;
  • A pre-generated Ethereum address of the virtual wallet with the associated QR code, which stores the identity of the digital crypto stamp that is ready for activation; and
  • A private key, i.e. a 12-word seed that represents the password for the digital wallet, which is required for activating or transferring the digital crypto stamp to a different Ethereum address.
The package also contains a jacket with the description of steps for accessing your digital crypto stamp.

Where can I see my purchased digital crypto stamp?

The digital crypto stamp may be seen in the wallet browser on the website or on the link crypto.posta.hr/stamp/v2/wallet. There are multiple ways to view your digital crypto stamp:
  • By entering the serial number from the crypto stamp package you purchased or by scanning the associated QR code;
  • By entering the Ethereum address from the crypto stamp package you purchased or by scanning the associated QR code;
  • By connecting to an external virtual wallet service provider.

What is the digital token of the crypto stamp?

Tokens are units of value that arise from smart contracts on one of the existing blockchains. The digital crypto stamp is a digital token created on the Ethereum platform; it is represented as a non- fungible token (NFT) on the blockchain, in accordance with the ERC721 standard. Such tokens are typically used for digital items with collectible value, such as the crypto stamp.

Which wallet can I use for storing the digital crypto stamp?

All wallets that support Ethereum ERC-721 tokens may be used. Some of the most popular wallets include Trust Wallet, Opera Wallet, Enjin Wallet.

What is the 12-word seed (private key) and why is it important to keep it safe?*

The private key is a 12-word seed that represents the password for your pre-generated virtual Ethereum wallet, which you received when purchasing your crypto stamp package. The private key is required if and when you wish to transfer your digital crypto stamp to a different Ethereum address or if and when you wish to activate your digital token (which will represent your digital crypto stamp and then be permanently stored in the Ethereum network). ATTENTION! Keep your key safe and store it in a secure place. You will not be able to transfer your token without your private key.

What does activation of the crypto stamp mean and do I have to activate my digital crypto stamp?*

Activation is the process of creating the accompanying token of the digital crypto stamp you purchased in the wallet. You may find a more detailed description of the activation process and instructions for purchasing the Ether cryptocurrency required for paying the costs of activation here.
Attention! The cost of activation is an arbitrary cost that the user pays to the Ethereum network by using the Ether cryptocurrency; Croatian Post does not have access to such cost and is in no way connected to the cost of crypto stamp activation.

Where can I buy the crypto stamp?

You can buy your crypto stamp package at all major post offices, on the website of Croatian Post’s Philately epostshop.hr and 1000 exclusive crypto stamps are available for purchase in the interactive web shop.

What is the interactive web shop?

The Interactive web shop is an interactive online platform where you can buy first 1000 exclusive stamps of the second edition of the Croatian crypto stamp.
The stamp is purchased in the manner that the user selects a field on an interactive mosaic, which field contains a randomised serial number of one of the first 1000 stamps created. The user does not know the serial number of the stamp he/she is purchasing until the end of the purchase process. When making the purchase, the user has to enter the address of his/her Ethereum wallet, to which his/her digital crypto stamp will be sent. You do not have to additionally activate a crypto stamp purchased in the interactive web shop.
Payment in the interactive web shop is only accepted in cryptocurrency. If you wish to pay using a different method, you may do so on the epostshop.hr or at the selected post office.

What are the delivery terms and costs?

Your crypto stamp package will be delivered to the address you entered while making the purchase.
  • 2,65 EUR (VAT included) for delivery in the Republic of Croatia.
  • 4,25 EUR for international delivery.

Time limits for delivery to the requested address in the Republic of Croatia are as follows:
